Money Stress Isn’t a Math Problem: What Financial Coaching Actually Is

I don’t sell investments.

I don’t sell insurance.

I don’t get a commission no matter what you decide to do with your money.

That surprises people. Most people’s only experience with someone who talks about money for a living is an advisor trying to sell a product, or an app trying to sell a subscription. A coach is neither.

So what is a coach, then?

A coach is a guide, not a hero. My job isn’t to swoop in, look at your numbers, and hand you a plan you didn’t help build. It’s to sit with you, ask good questions, and help you build a plan you’ll actually stick to when life gets messy.

I’m James. I’m a Certified Ramsey Master Coach based in Regina, and I work with young adults and young families across Saskatchewan who feel constantly behind with money and are tired of guessing.

How I ended up here

My wife and I have been living this way for years. One of her conditions before we got married was that we couldn’t have any debt. That decision put us on solid ground from day one.

For a long time I thought staying out of debt and saving was enough. Then I started experimenting with investing, first buying individual stocks, then learning about index funds. Along the way I read The Psychology of Money and The Simple Path to Wealth. Those books, and the experience behind them, made something clear: the real difference isn’t income or fancy investments. It’s behaviour and systems.

The biggest lesson was the freedom that comes from being completely debt-free.

There were plenty of times the math said we could justify a low-interest loan or stretch a little further, and plenty of people around us were doing exactly that. We didn’t. Staying debt-free meant saying no to things we could have technically afforded on paper, and every time, the quiet that came from owing nobody anything was worth more than whatever we passed up. Peace of mind beats optimizing every last dollar.

That became the goal for our family: financial independence without constant pressure. We use zero-based budgeting to keep lifestyle creep in check. Every dollar gets a job.

We have four kids. The pressure to sign them up for everything is constant, but I’ve learned they don’t need it. Teaching them to be responsible with money matters more than matching what everyone else is doing.

I started Pathway Financial because it’s my passion. I spent a decade in law enforcement, and one thing that stuck with me the whole time was how many people who were paid well still lived paycheck to paycheck. It wasn’t a math problem. Nobody had ever sat down with them and helped build a real plan. That’s the gap I wanted to fill.

What coaching actually looks like

Coaching is a partnership. We look at the real numbers: income, expenses, debt and savings, laid out plainly. We build a plan that fits how you actually live, not a generic template you’ll abandon in three weeks. Then we meet regularly so you stay accountable.

It isn’t complicated. It’s just rarely done alone for long.

What it is not:

  • Investment advice or product recommendations
  • Tax preparation or accounting
  • A sales pitch for anything

I stay strictly on the coaching side, because that’s where most people actually need the help: the behaviour, the habits, and the consistent follow-through.

Who this is for

A lot of the people I talk to aren’t reckless with money. They’re just trying to keep up. They’re responding to the pressure: the bigger house, the newer vehicle, the kids in every activity, the vacations that get posted online. They’re not careless. They’re exhausted from trying to meet expectations that were never realistic in the first place.

If you’re a young adult just starting out, finishing school, dealing with student loans, or trying to build your first real budget, you’re in the right place.

If you’re a young family feeling the weight of groceries, housing, and the constant pull to keep up, you’re also in the right place.

Feeling broke doesn’t automatically mean you’re bad with money. It often just means nobody ever taught you a clear system, and the noise around you is loud. It’s okay to say no. It’s okay to cut back on the things that don’t matter so you can focus on the things that do. Getting out of debt removes a massive amount of stress, and living within your means while still planning ahead is an honourable thing.

Where to start

If any of this sounds like where you’re at, I’d like to hear from you. No pressure and no pitch, just a real conversation about where you are and what would actually help.

I’m based in Regina and work with people across Saskatchewan by video, so where you live doesn’t matter.

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

I’m a financial coach, not a licensed financial advisor, broker, or planner. Coaching is educational and supportive in nature. I don’t sell or recommend investment products, and nothing here should be taken as individualized financial, legal, or tax advice.
